How to use Excel to analyse data

Reliable data analysis from a familiar tool

Excel is great for creating spreadsheets and for charting results but how do you get it to produce well-organised sets of results from a mass of raw data like performance data or survey responses?

Specialist analytical software is expensive and takes time to learn. Yet most of us have Excel on our desktops, and with the right know-how, it can do the bulk of what people need when ‘crunching numbers’.

You need to be careful though as Excel does not have the built-in safety features found in more specialised analytical software tools. This means it’s vital to know its limitations and how to work within them safely and reliably.

What could be worse than being challenged on the figures you produced, only to find you accidentally made an error?

That’s where this workshop will help you. It gets you up to speed in one day on what Excel can and can’t do when you analyse data.

Once you have mastered it you’ll find Excel offers a multitude of timesaving techniques, and we will cover many of them here.

You’ll take away knowing:

This is a hands-on day where delegates will be asked to bring their own laptops pre loaded with Excel.

We will assume delegates will have a reasonable working knowledge of Excel but want to learn specifically how to best use it to analyse and make sense of performance or research data. Delegates should already be comfortable with writing simple formulas, working across multiple worksheets and creating simple charts.

Your trainer

I doubt if anyone is better fitted to tutor this workshop than Tim Macer. Tim is one of the experts on the subject. He regularly provides training and advice on how to make best use of data analysis software in both Europe and North America.

One major factor is that Tim is independent. He is not linked to any software or hardware supplier and so has no secret commercial agenda. You get completely unbiased and sound advice.

What delegates say about this trainer

"Made me realize how much more quickly and easily data can be collected and analysed with the right data collection package. Also made them seem much less confusing than before."
Amanda Fisher, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Southampton City Council

"Very worthwhile, pleased I attended."
Richard Garbutt, Senior Performance and Consultation Officer, East Lyndsey District Council

What I picked up - and did - after courses by this trainer

We heard from  Susan Falder, Assistant Quality Co-ordinator for Impact Housing Association, that she had been able to use what she'd learnt on this course, with great success:

"The course was very useful. It helped us to make a decision about which was the right survey package to buy, which would best meet our needs.

I played around with the samples you gave us to see which was the easiest to use, and we got a couple of reps out to give us demos'. Your day certainly helped me to ask the right questions.

We are now more than happy with the package we finally bought.
Sue"
