Managing a newsletter for a local authority

This is a real challenge. Huge improvements that reap far-reaching benefits are very often possible


A well-known study by MORI found that local authorities are the worst at communicating – by far. Certainly that’s what the public think.

In fact 25% of all respondents think they are the worst information provider out of 17 different types of public sector bodies. Schools, hospitals, the Post Office – even the Inland Revenue - were all rated significantly better.

But there is something much more important. MORI also found a link between
satisfaction with information and other council services: they go hand in hand. People are more likely to be happy with a council's services if they think it provides good information.

Newsletters are a vital part of any council’s communications strategy. In fact every local authority needs one. Unfortunately, their potential is often underestimated – indeed, usually ignored. Yet the humble newsletter can be a very cost effective, targeted way to keep residents informed about services and improve the council’s standing in the community.
