How to measure social return on investment - One day course

You're suddenly asked to justify your project - but you know nothing about measuring it's return on investment. What next?

What do your projects really achieve? How can you demonstrate the value of your programmes and initiatives to commissioners and government? How can you justify your budget to your board or senior management?

Social Return on investment or SROI is a framework for measuring and accounting for the value of what you do.

It is a type of cost benefit analysis that accounts for social and environmental impacts alongside financial impacts. More and more organisations are using SROI to demonstrate the impact and value for money of their programmes.

But many people are not sure where to start with SROI, and want to understand how they can apply the principles and thinking of SROI to their own projects and organisation.

That is why we have asked the UK’s top speaker Oliver Kempton to put together a training day as a matter of urgency.

There is a host of reasons why more and more organisations are using SROI. Here are six of them:

• It gives you a broader measure of the value that you create

• It can improve your case for funding and make your tenders more persuasive

•  It can help you to communicate the impact of what you do

• It can help you identify where service delivery can be improved

• It can help decision making around resource allocation

• It is endorsed by the UK Government and National Audit Office

The key topics that you will cover are:

• What is social return on investment? How is it similar and how is it different to other forms of evaluation such as cost benefit analysis and social accounting?

• What are the key principles behind it?

• How do you identify the key areas, stakeholders and outcomes for inclusion?

• What are the key considerations for measuring and valuing change?

• What are the key considerations to avoid over claiming?

• Next steps: how to decide if all or part of SROI is appropriate, how to take it forward, and sources of help and information

To help you get up to speed with the topic we have engaged one of the UK’s top speakers on SROI, Oliver Kempton.

Having helped pioneer much of the early work in the UK in SROI Oliver is an independent consultant. He is also a tutor in SROI at Goldsmith’s College, University of London and an SROI assurer for the SROI Network.
