New Topics and Techniques for Tenant Participation

Delegates praised it to the skies! So it’s back again – “new and improved” – Just about everything you need to know

It would

You know, I am sure, that resident involvement work is far from easy, and often downright frustrating.

And I am equally sure you know two major reasons why: the lack of new ideas - and even more crucial, the skills to develop those ideas.

That’s why we are starting a series of one day workshops which show you how to involve and empower tenants is so relevant. Not just relevant: extremely popular, which is why we have beefed up the old version.

Of course, what the day covers is important – but how good are the speakers? And how useful are the ideas? The best testimony comes from previous delegates:

“Top quality speakers: all relevant and interesting”
Jon Thurlow, Tenant Involvement Officer, Howard Cottage Housing Association

“New and further skills around how to involve more residents and promotion/marketing was useful. Also enjoyed Race Relations session. See you at the next one”
Tim Nash, Participation Co-ordinator, London Borough of Croydon

“Very lively, loads of new ideas. Very useful and practical two days”
Sarah Lander, Tenant Support Worker, Southend Borough Council

 “Excellent  course”
June Martin, Community Development Officer, Coast and Countryside Housing Services

“Gave greater understanding of Who your tenants are: why they get involved  and How to involve them and capture their attention. Very professional. I left feeling positive and enthusiastic. Thanks”
Lesley Watson, Community Initiatives Officer, Metropolitan Housing Trust

Your first session begins with Oliver Kempton, who is the UK’s leading speaker on measuring social return on investment. Oliver will walk you through the key stages of conducting a SROI of your own resident involvement and community investment work.

This is a crucial subject. If landlords aren’t up to date with measuring social return on investment of their work they fall by the wayside. Topics include:

• How do you measure the return on investment of your tenant involvement and community investment projects?
• How to measure the impact of lots of small resident involvement projects at the same time
• How do you identify the key areas, stakeholders and outcomes for inclusion

Everything you need to know about tenant involvement and the law gives you the opportunity to hear from Nick Billingham of Devonshires Solicitors, one of UK’s top housing management legal experts.

Crucially the session covers the area of the law and community events.

Nick covers everything you need to know about the law and:

Tenant groups
Public or open residents’ meetings
What to do in the event of libel and slander at a community event
Fun days and community events
Coach trips and other travel arrangements to an event
The taking and the use of photographs
What the law says about prize draws, raffles, competitions where you are forecasting a result and games of skill, vouchers and other incentives
The legal implications of working with particular groups such as children
Neighbourhood charters, estate agreements and community contracts

If managing tricky tenant meetings is your nightmare you will see there are many practical things you can do, before and during the meeting:
For instance you can minimise the possibility of catastrophe by:
• Planning  properly
• Managing people’s expectations
• Being clear about the role of the facilitator or chair of the meeting
• Starting the meeting with confidence, then using personal skills, the right verbal and body language to keep things moving and on track
• Involving the audience so you reduce the chance of disruptive behavior
With 25 years of housing and the latest accelerated learning techniques Loraine Kennedy will show you how to do all these things and more.

Want to break through apathy and get residents and their communities really involved?

Try making it fun!

Far more than you might imagine, the arts can reach people’s hearts and minds in a way traditional means never can. It could be music, theatre, dance, making films, painting. There is no limit to what can interest and involve them – you just have to know how.
This doesn’t call for elite or highbrow activities that daunt or put off residents. It can help the community to deal with real issues safely and creatively. In fact arts projects give residents a rare opportunity to reach out and express their views to the wider community.
In this hands-on session the UK’s top participatory arts groups, All Change, gives you a guided tour of all you need to know about How to use the arts to engage and involve residents.
Here’s a summary of the areas covered by All Change’s Artistic Associate Suzanne Lee:

• Why the arts are much more relevant to everyday life than many imagine
• How to use the arts to explore and make residents' views known to the wider community and decision makers
• How to stage arts workshops that people really want to participate in
• How best to promote your events to the community
