How to train tenants to be debt advisers

Good debt advice for your tenants is clearly essential – but how on earth can you provide it?

                                                          2 pm – 3pm – 21 July 2011

We all know the frightening levels of debt in this country.

Millions are still paying off credit card debts incurred over five years ago. Interest levels are still way, way above the bank rate and people desperately need good advice.

With the universal credit being introduced by 2013 budgeting and money advice skills will be more important than ever for tenants.

Social landlords will also benefit if tenants are given sound advice. If tenants can manage their own finances it will help landlords keep their rent and service charge arrears down.

But how can tenants get good advice when so many advice centres and bureaus have been closed down because of the financial cuts?

One solution is for social landlords to train a small number of tenants so they can give  advice to others.

Resident ambassadors, as they are known, will give basic advice so that they can assist other residents with budgeting and finance problems. They won’t become experts but they will be trained to give basic advice on a whole range of matters to others.

This approach has been developed by Stuart Freeman, one of the UK’s leading authorities on public sector debt counselling.

In one hour he’ll take you through the key stages of what you have to do to train your tenants to be debt ambassadors.

You’ll cover:

The financial problems and difficulties facing tenants
The challenge of Universal Credit and the impact on personal budgeting
Financial inclusion and the vision of the 'Big Society'
How to enable tenants to give basic advice to others on debt problems, money management and welfare benefits
How to follow the Institute of Money Advisers Training Modules and obtain  qualifications
How to access more training for tenants on becoming a Debt Ambassador

The webinar is happening on Thursday, 21 July 2011 between 2pm and 3pm and it's bound to be oversubscribed as we can only handle a limited number of seats.

The fact that something can be done – and must be done - in this very difficult area is why we have asked Stuart Freeman, one of the UK’s top debt advice consultants to put together a one day course on the subject.
