What does your organisation and its’ initiatives really achieve? Your only answer can come through measuring the social return on your investment.
Social Return on investment or SROI is a framework for measuring and accounting for the value of what you do. It is a type of cost benefit analysis that accounts for social and environmental impacts alongside financial impacts.
It’s very flexible and can take many different forms. It can look at the social value generated by an entire organisation or it can focus on just one specific aspect of the organisation’s work.
It can look at something that has already taken place or it can look into the future and predict how much social value will be created by a project or organisation.
There is a host of reasons why more and more organisations are using SROI. Here are eight of them:
- It can help you deliver better services
- It can improve your case for funding
- It can make your tenders more persuasive
- It’s broader than cost benefit analysis and goes beyond what can be captured in financial terms
- It helps you to communicate the impact of what you do
- It allows you to measure the true value of what you do
- It allows you to make the right decision about your projects
- It measure change in ways that are relevant to the people or organisations

The use of Social Return on Investment has been pioneered by the NEF (the New Economics Foundation) which is why I have asked their senior consultant, Oliver Kempton, to give you a introductory guided tour to what all the fuss is.
Oliver won’t turn you into an expert in one hour but he will be able to get you started in using this incredibly useful tool, as well point you in the direction of other resources and help
